Natural Scents for Your Home

Who doesn't love having a home that smells delightful? It's even enjoyable to change the scents throughout the year -- fragrant flower scents during the spring and summer, with spicy cinnamon or cloves during the fall and winter months.

That being said, those artificial room scents filled with chemicals can wreak havoc on your sinuses if you struggle with allergies, it can disrupt your hormone production, and can give you a headache. And honestly when you get them home - do they ever REALLY smell like the labels they've been given - Strawberry Fields, Island Delight, Ocean Breeze, Christmas memories? Those scented plug-ins, candles, and room sprays that you're likely so used to using all have healthier alternatives.

Some healthy alternatives include homemade potpourri, using a slow-cooker to simmer water with flowers, citrus rind, cinnamon sticks, or whatever you desire, and using pure essential oils to scent your home.

I guarantee these healthier options will smell much better to you also, as you won't be breathing the chemical aspects of the store-bought candles and scents.

Essential oils are an easy way to make this possible. The recipes below will fill an 8 oz spray bottle.

The vodka or alcohol in the recipe helps the essential oils and water to mix more thoroughly, and helps the homemade air freshener to dry faster. You could omit it if you like, but I really think it results in a better end product. If you don’t keep a lot of alcohol in your home, simply use vanilla extract. It adds extra punch to the recipe, and you can even make real homemade vanilla extract yourself.

3 DIY Air Freshener Spray Formulas:

- 3/4 cup water (tap or distilled water is fine)

- 2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract

- One of the essential oil combinations below

Combine in an 8oz spray bottle, shake well, and spray as needed.

10 drops wild orange essential oil

8 drops peppermint essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

5 drops chamomile essential oil

Use 2 tablespoons real vanilla extract in place of the 2 tablespoons of vodka.

5 drops wild orange essential oil

5 drops lemon essential oil

5 drops lime essential oil

5 drops grapefruit essential oil

Try one of these or create your own and enjoy a more natural, healthy good smelling home!
